The problem isn't that the field was NULL, it was non-NULL but not a valid
value (IOW it was uninitialized).
I fixed the core dump in r49554 and will schedule it to be backported to the
1.10 trunk.
I'm not entirely convinced what good doing 2 passes without dissection is
though... Should that be prevented?
