I've gone through the proposed 1.8 patch and noted the cases where the proposed
changes were different than those already done in trunk.
It turns out that there aren't that many differences. Also: only some of the
differences are substantive.
So: I'll complete the review and determine what (if any) changes could be made
to trunk and make those changes as appropriate.
