As a reference, the patch was committed in r47298 with a follow-up patch from
Evan in r47300 to resolve the build failures I hadn't experienced when
compiling/testing on Windows 7 64-bit. Both commits have been scheduled to be
backported to the 1.8 and 1.6 trunks.
And by the way, the Wikipedia article,
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hyphen#Other_uses, indicates, "The hyphen is
sometimes used to hide letters in words ...", so the hyphen seemed like a
reasonable choice for a replacement character to me, since basically that's
what it's doing, namely hiding invalid characters in the filename.
