Since removing the files fixed the problem, I'm going to close this bug as
fixed, even though the root cause was never identified, and that's unfortunate
but too much time has passed, so we may never know.
If it should ever happen again, then feel free to reopen the bug or file a new
one, being sure to include your preference files again as you did here.
Hopefully then someone will be able to find the root cause.
