My understanding is that the IEEE created 802.1q for the sole purpose of
communicating VLAN identifiers on Ethernet links. Although they are integrated
into the Ethernet header, 802.1q tags were shown as if they were an
encapsulation method such as ISL. There were also some limitations of the
descriptions in Wireshark such as when it came to 802.1q-in-802.1q tagging
misidentifying the second tag as an EtherType if I remember correctly.
I never imagined that other dissectors besides Ethernet would use it because it
was meant for Ethernet. Other uses of the 802.1q tag have popped up in other
dissectors that I wasn't aware of, so I apologize for not having the time to
work around these other issues since my initial changes.
