The functionality of <Ctrl>A (select all text) and <Ctrl>X (cut selected
text) is consistent in Windows, OSX, KDE, and GNOME

is true for only 3 of the 4 desktop environments you note - <Ctrl>A does as
God^WEMACS intended in OS X, and goes to the beginning of the line/field. :-)
It's <Cmd>A that selects all, and <Cmd>X that cuts selected items, in OS X.
However, the point remains - we shouldn't be stealing common command shortcuts
for our own purposes.)
