So I thought it might be nice to have at least one alternative to Inacon's
help, one that would complement it for those protocols either not freely
available or not supported at all by Inacon. (See bug 3045 and the discussion
on the developer's list about this here:
http://www.wireshark.org/lists/wireshark-dev/201005/msg00317.html)
As it turns out, it seems perfectly OK to have more than one protocol help
file, which I didn't realize earlier. But once I discovered that, I decided to
create another one since I wouldn't have to worry about sacrificing the better
help from Inacon when available.
So the one I created is a basic compilation of all the protocol pages available
on the Wireshark wiki that I could find. I created it by manually combing the
wiki for them. It was quite tedious (and boring) and I'm sure I made a mistake
or two, mis-sorted some or unintentionally omitted some protocol pages
entirely. Oh well, what do you expect for version 0.0.1. :) Anyway, hopefully
you find it useful. A potentially good side effect of directing people to the
wiki for help as an option is that it might encourage folks to add new protocol
pages and also to expand upon some of the existing ones that have very little
content.
I still think it would be a good idea to distribute and automatically install
the protocol_help files in the appropriate locations when Wireshark is
installed so users won't have to manually do it. Same goes for the GeoIP
files.
Anyway, the attached file contains both the wireshark.ini and a file based on
Inacon's ph.ini file, which I renamed as inacon.ini. The inacon.ini is
essentially the same as their ph.ini file, except that I modified it slightly
to add the missing path separator to the location and to add the
"Source=(Inacon)" line so you will know which help you are going to when more
than one of them is available. Because of those minor changes, I also bumped
the minor version, although this will surely conflict with inacon's versioning
when/if they ever release another version.
