Note that, in OS X, if you request 802.11 or 802.11+radiotap headers, the
adapter is put in monitor mode, whether you want it to be in monitor mode or
not. The Broadcom-based AirPort adapters in some Macs (at least some iMacs)
can remain associated with the network when in monitor mode, but the
Atheros-based adapters in other Macs (at least some models of MacBook and
MacBook Pro, possibly others) cannot. Because of that, with the Atheros-based
adapters, there might not *be* any outgoing packets to see.
If you open System Profiler (Apple menu -> About This Mac, click the "More
Info..." button), and look at "AirPort Card" under "Network", what does it
report?
