Issue one.
The difference comes from the fact that in the first instance you save one
direction, while in the second instance you save both. That means both have to
be mixed together. This is done in a crude way to prevent clipping by adding
the two linear values and dividing them by two.
Using save in reverse direction only should give you the normal level again.

Issue two.
That may be related to RTP timestamping, although I haven't looked into that
yet.
