I've tested the patch using the capture file provided by Thomas.
The capture no longer segfaults (on Linux) while reading the file.
Unfortunately, if I force a redisplay (such as by changing a protocol
preference), I eventually get another segfault. I suspect that the segfault is
not related to the original one but I ran out of time tonight to dig further.
Hopefully it'll be OK to attach the trace so others can dig further.
In any case I expect to be able to work on this on the weekend.
