Pre: An open file and a collapsed tree selected in the packet detail pane.

Enter some text in the display filter text box. Position the cursor half way
the text. Now Shift+left arrow selects text, as expected. 
Shift+right arrow opens the tree in the packet detail pane, i.s.o. selecting
text in the display filter text box.

Without an open file it works as expected.
