Problem clarified. For whatever reason it seems the installation of Wireshark
corrupted (at least I think it did it is the only thing that was installed) my
list of installed fonts. Simply browsing in explorer to the Windows\Fonts
directory seemed to trigger a reconstruction of the font information (it
initially only showed a dozen of them and after 30 seconds suddenly all my
other fonts appeared too).
I can only conclude the preferences window has a dependency on a specific font
that is not there in the main program (although captures came up with clear
font issues, i.e. no characters but rectangles instead). This is how I started
suspecting what was the problem. In fact I wanted to go to preferences to check
what font was set because captures were clearly displayed in an unknown font.
Not sure why this happened though, maybe because I run xp64, maybe because my
Windows system drive is on F: rather then the classic C:.
