Summary: memory accumulates after restart and dumpcap*
Product: Wireshark
Version: 0.99.5
Platform: PC
OS/Version: Windows XP
Status: NEW
Severity: Major
Priority: Medium
Component: Wireshark
AssignedTo: wireshark-bugs@xxxxxxxxxxxxx
ReportedBy: haluk.ozoguz@xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx
Build Information:
Wireshark 0.99.5 SVN rev 20677

Memory Leak:
1. When I restart the capture, I see that Wireshark.exe memory usage does not
go to initial value (about 36 Meg). Evertime I stop and start capture new mem
used adds up to the old value (accumulates). I can only reset the memory usage
by closing and opening the wireshark application. I believe restarting capture
should free up the previously captured memory location.
dumpcap*
2. When too many packets captured, wireshark crashes, even killing the
application is not good enough. There is a dumpcap.* process that we have to
kill manually when this happens. Some protection/recover mechanism is
necessary. Also may be next time we opened wireshark dumpcap* remains has to be
cleaned up.
