Note that G_BEGIN_DECLS and G_END_DECLS don't appear to be defined by the GLib
1.2[.x] headers, so we shouldn't use them - we should use

    #ifdef __cplusplus
    extern "C" {
    #endif /* __cplusplus */
        ...
    #ifdef _cplusplus
    }
    #endif /* __cplusplus */
