A lot of ICMP implementations return more IP-Header plus 8 bytes. But
the only thing you know is that they return at least IP header + 8 bytes.

Ethereal uses what it gets...

hi,
i need to know what was the RFC or protocol specification that ethereal
follows for ICMP protocol. could u please help me out.
i just had a traffic file which decoded by ethereal shows ICMP error
message returning a payload which is against RFC 792
The payload returned by ICMP error message (destination host unreachable) should be IP header+ 8 bytes but ethereal decodes (IP header + more than 8
bytes)
