I want to capture 802.11 WLAN packets from Ethereal. But when I
tried with
NetGear wireless card, I was able to capture Ping packets
But It was not showing any WLAN packets like
1) Beacon frames
2) Authentication request/response
3) Association request/response
So please any buddy can tell me how to capture these packets.
Step 1: make absolutely sure you are *NOT* running Windows on the
machine
on which you're running Ethereal. Trying to capture those frames on
Windows is pretty much hopeless.
For information about capturing them on Linux or one of the BSDs, see
http://wiki.wireshark.org/CaptureSetup/WLAN
You will, as another reply noted, probably have to put your WLAN
adapter
into monitor mode to see those packets. Note that, when in monitor
mode,
your adapter will not be associated with any access point, and
probably
won't even work in ad-hoc mode, so you'll probably want to turn off
host
name resolution unless the machine is also connected to some other
wireless network or a wired network.
is this possible on MacOS X?
Does apple's driver support monitor mode and if yes, how is it enabled?
