My 2 cents: (not that you asked :-)
There are those who do not want to actively visit forums but would
rather get email sent to them.
As far as search capabilities, there are many sites that maintain
searchable mailing list archives if searching through your email is not
desired.
Most <whatever>-users lists do tend to be high volume and most (novice)
questions would have been resolved either by (my prioritization):
1 - figuring it out on your own (if I figure something out, I have
learned it *far* better than if someone tells me)
2 - reading the documentation / source code (refer also to #1)
3 - search the Internet (including mailing list archives)
Not to be a wet blanket for your idea, but there are things that work
well on discussion forums (when people have time to use a browser and
keep checking back or configure it to email them for replies to their
posts). I don't happen to think that a high-volume list is one of them.
I find it easier to scan the headers occasionally to see if there is a
pearl among them, and search my own email (faster than Internet
searches) when looking for messages related to a very specific thing.
