Since you want to sniff WLAN Packets you are restricted to Linux
environment

You can go through the list of Wlan chipsets which have Linux drivers at

All chipsets with Monitor=yes can be used as sniffers

I am currently using an Atheros based card. For my sniffer.
Netgear WG511T, Chipset Atheros AR5002G
