An update: ethereal 0.10.7 runs on on Windows 98. Reading the readme.win32.txt file indicates (for 0.10.8) possible problems with MSVCRT.dll if the exe was compiled with MSVC++ version 7 instead of version 6.

The Ethereal executables that we release are *supposed* to be compiled with MSVC++ v6, for the reasons given in the README.win32 file. The licensing issues alone are sufficient to keep us from using MSVC++ v7 (I guess that's a consequence, whether intended or unintended, of Microsoft's hatred of the GPL), but the technical reasons are also a problem.

If any of the libraries used by Ethereal were built with MSVC++ v7, that'd cause problems - but I'd expect those to show up on Windows NT 4.0/2K/XP/Server 2003 as well.
