Thanks for the idea.  Yes, it worked this way.
 
My Sniffer portable 4.7 crashes if I open an Ethereal capture which has been saves as a Sniffer DOS file with a .caz extension.  I suppose that's predictable.  However, this is the file extension Sniffer 4.7 captures default to.   
 
It's an "unsupported File format" as a .cap.  But, .enc can be opened with my Sniffer.

What did you call the file?

NAI Sniffer requires the file to have certain suffixes , e.g. ".cap" for the format you selected.
Maybe that could be the reason why you don't get it to work.
I have not used Sniffer 4.7 myself.

You can also try with saving in "Network Associates Sniffer (DOS-based)" and name the file so it is ending with ".enc",
and try if that file can be read.
