Today I installed WinPcap 3.0 and Ethereal 0.10.8 under Win98SE. On trying
to run Ethereal, it says "Registering Dissectors" and then produces an
Illegal Operation error:
ETHEREAL caused an invalid page fault in
module MSVCRT.DLL at 0167:7800272e.

This happens every time I attempt to run the program.
I see from previous posts that David (12/16) and Kenneth Heal (12/21) had
the same problem with 10.8 under WinME, and Nabla (12/23) had the exact
same problem I had under Win98SE.
My msvcrt.dll is version 6.00.8797.0, which is not the 8168.0 version
referred to in the KB article, and which is already later than the
suggested library replacement version, so I'm at a bit of a loss as to what
to do about that.
Since David and Kenneth reported that 10.7 worked fine for them under ME,
it appears there may be some general problem with 10.8 affecting the older
Windows versions. Has anyone gotten 10.8 to work with 98SE? If so, what
version of msvcrt.dll worked?
Should I reinstall 10.8 and select some other GTK format? Should I try
10.7? Any suggestions would be appreciated.
