That is correct. .199 is my machine. But I get the error from the
console of the sun box also.

I.e. 172.20.16.199 is your desktop machine, and it's running an X
server,
and some other machine is the Sun box, and you try to set the DISPLAY
(all
upper case) environment variable to 172.20.16.199:0.0 and run Ethereal,
and you still get the error?

Or this is a Sun workstation, so that the Sun box *is* your desktop
machine?
