For awhile I was having similar problems with various undefined/multiple
defined symbols in  /sw/lib/libiconv.dylib and /sw/lib/libintl.1.dylib
during the .lib portion of the builds on my OS X system as well.

For some reason the build was getting some info from the already installed
version and the problem went away when I deinstalled the existing version
using "make uninstall" from the previous build directory.

After that the new build completed successfully...
