Reposted due to persistent complaints about this problem.  These are the only two solutions that I've seen:
For those who recently posted about Ethereal 10.6 crashing, especially in WIN98, dzenizo's fix below may work.  Posted 10/6/04.

WinPCap 3.0 didn't help with Ethereal 10.6.  The crash appears to be in Ethereal startup, before WinPCap comes into play.  I uninstalled Ethereal 10.6 and installed 10.5a with WinPCap 3.0.  That works for me.

I'm happy to report Ethereal is now working for me!

I uninstalled Ethereal, and when I reinstalled it again, I selected the GTK-Wimp box (it's deselected by default) in the  " Choose Components window, that did it.

I just bought an elderly but intact Digital HiNote Ultra (on eBay) running Windows 98.  After downloading and installing WinPcap_3_1_beta_3.exe and ethereal-setup-0.10.6.exe the only result of attempting to run ethereal is:

Thanks!
