I have a Microsoft 500 wireless router with five
computers attached (one wireless), and have been
monitoring them for the past few months. I am
connecting directly using one of the two ethernet
connections on my motherboard to a Netgear ENT104 that
is between the base station and cable modem. (the
other cable is connected directly to the router for
internet access)
This week I suddenly can't see anything on the network
in Ethereal monitoring except for lots of ARP protocol
who/tells from the router gateway source address. No
tcp etc. activity can be read at all from any
host/ip/mac address. An occassional line of udp data
comes by. Connecting through the internet by all
computers has remained fast and stable through the
router, 104, and cable modem.
If I try to monitor my computer's internet direct
connection to the router I get all data shown
immediately in Ethereal. I have tried swapping cables,
checking settings. No hardware has been changed. But
I did update my Microsoft router
software(automatically through the net) at about the
same time this started. Though I'm still a newbie at
this I can't see how that would change the data to be
undecipherable after it's left the router on it's way
to the hub/modem. Possibly it changed XP software
somewhere important?
I turned off all firewalls, etc. also, no difference.
Again, I'm just learning and would appreciate any
thoughts or advice on what I should look for to regain
seeing the data again.
Thank you very much!
John Marshall
