it's being caused by your switch determining it's spanning tree topology. for cisco, you can eliminate this by setting span-tree portfast to enable. (it's hunting for other connected switches).

Subject: [Ethereal-users] Protocol question

When running ethereal on our LAN I get a flood of packets with protocol
0x8808. the source is 00:00:00_00:00:00 and the destination is
Spanning-tree-(for-bridges)_01. Under info it says Ethernet II.

What I am trying to find out is what device on our network is sending this
junk out so I can shut it up. I have been unable to find any useful
information on google about it. Any one know?

Matt Kopf
