If by "recognize my modem" you mean that you have dial-up Internet access
and you want Ethereal to recognize the network interface for the dial-up
connection, then:

    if you're running some UNIX-flavored OS, there will probably be an
interface with a name such as "ppp0", at least when your dial-up
connection is active, and you'd capture on that;

    if you're running Windows:

    WinPcap 3.1 beta might be able to handle PPP interfaces on
NT/2000/XP/2003 Server, and WinPcap 3.0 *might* handle it on 95/98/Me.
