Ethereal will run on virtually any hardware.

If you need to do a lot of postcapture analysis it is good to have as much
memory as possible.

If you are going to capture packets for later analysis the hardware
requirements are basically
a function of how much traffic you are going to capture.
For this TEHEREAL is a good capture program.

For capturing at high speed you should really consider installing Linux and
capturing from Linux.
Many people have seen that there is a huge difference between how fast you
can capture data
betwen Windows and Linux running on the same hardware.
For sub 100baseT speeds it shouldnt matter much.

For GbE links you need a high end PC and you must use Linux since Windows
usually starts dropping packets at speeds above >10MByte/s
while Linux works without packetloss capturing at least up to 60MByte/s with
no problem whatsoever and no dropped packets.
