I have been using Ethereal for several years and love the app. I have never
had an issue with compilling this before, and have done so on many platforms.

Here is my system config..

Mandrake 9.0
2.4.19 custom kernel

The Ethereal package has been configured with the following options.
                    Build ethereal : yes
                   Build tethereal : yes
                     Build editcap : yes
                    Build mergecap : yes
                   Build text2pcap : yes
                     Build idl2eth : yes
                     Build randpkt : no
                      Build dftest : no

                    Install setuid : no
                       Use plugins : yes
               Use GTK+ v2 library : no
                  Use pcap library : yes
                  Use zlib library : yes
                  Use pcre library : no
Use GNU ADNS library : yes
Use IPv6 name resolution : yes
     Use UCD SNMP/NET-SNMP library : yes (ucd-snmp)

This error is coming from the GTK makefile..

Making all in gtk

make[2]: *** No rule to make target `Makefile.common', needed by
`Makefile.in'. Stop.
make[2]: Leaving directory `/home/mark/archives/ethereal-0.10.1/gtk'
make[1]: *** [all-recursive] Error 1
make[1]: Leaving directory `/home/mark/archives/ethereal-0.10.1'
make: *** [all] Error 2

I also tried making the gtk standalone.. with the following result.

*** No rule to make target `Makefile.common', needed by `Makefile.in'. Stop.
