Reg,

Have you checked that the auto-detect / duplex settings are correctly negotiated?

If you have a NIC running half-duplex and the switch port set to full duplex then you can have "lock ups". The NIC will detect a collision if it sends a packet at the same time as the switch.  The switch won't think there is a problem so it won't try to resent it's packet, and it's up to higher level protocols to detect that something went wrong.  This should only be temporary though ( 60secs max) so if the client dies completely this probably isn't your problem.

In this case, ethereal won't be able to help too much here as it won't see the collisions.  But if you use a managed switch you can check for runts and fragments via the RMON1 etherstats table.  If not you can keep an eye on "netstat -s" on  the ME box and see if the "Segments Retransmitted" is increasing. Apps only your local LAN should see very few TCP retransmissions.

Subject: [Ethereal-users] Spotting a bad nic?

I’m sort of troubleshooting a windows me network for someone.  All the machines on the network randomly lock up, though I’ve noticed that transferring data on the network seems to trigger the lockups.  I’ve swapped out switches and all nics use the same driver which I’ll be updating, but it is possible that a bad nic or cabling somewhere would be causing this?  If so, how do I spot a bad nic with ethereal on a switched network?  Should the data just look like garbage or do I need to look for something?  Will the source IP still be legible so I can spot the culprit?
