I am using the latest version of ethereal 0.10.0 and I am trying to
capture SIP messages from an IP phone. I have a Cisco ATA which is
connected to a LAN thru a hub to which my computer is also connected.
I start ethereal and switch on the ATA. But when I stop the packet
capture after some time, I do not see a single SIP message. I do get a
dial tone in the ATA though. Is there anything that I am missing here?
Are you seeing any traffic at all from or to the ATA, other than
broadcast or multicast traffic?
If not, then:
Is the machine running Ethereal the machine to which the ATA is
connecting?
If not, then are you certain that the hub is a real hub, as opposed to
a "switching hub"?
If not, see
http://www.ethereal.com/faq.html#q5.1
If so, then is it a dual-speed hub?
If so, is the ATA's Ethernet running at the same speed as the Ethernet
on the machine running Ethereal?
If not, configure the Ethernet on the machine running Ethereal to run
at the same speed as the Ethernet on the ATA, as per the FAQ item
referred to by the URL above.
