You get this when you disabled the link-layer protocol you're using (probably Ethernet on your Xircom card). Go to Analyze -> Enabled protocols and enable all protocols you need (maybe they're all disabled, then you can click on "Enable all").

Subject: [Ethereal-users] WTAP_ENCAP = 1 Problem

Hello,

I am attempting to run Ethereal 0.10.0 with WinPCap 3.0 on a windows 2000 with Service Pack 4 applied.  I have a Xircom CardBus Ethernet 10/100 adapter installed.

Every capture I run, or previously saved capture file I open, for all packets the Protocol is listed as UNKNOWN and the Info field contains WTAP_ENCAP = 1.

I have tried uninstalling an reinstalling both ethereal and winpcap.  I tried the previous version of both ethereal and winpcap with no change.  This laptop was recently upgraded from Win95 to Win2k.  Ethereal worked fine under Win95.

Any ideas how to fix this issue?

Thanks,
Michael Foote
