The problem could be related to a NET-SNMP problem.
My guess is that you have an environment variable MIBDIRS defined on your PC and that it points to a directory with MIBs
that has a faulty in them. Maybe Enterasys Netsight Element manager is installed on the PC?

You can maybe try to move the MIB files in the MIBDIRS directory to another directory temporarily and see if you can start Ethereal
(or remove the MIBDIRS environment variable). 
Ethereal will then use the MIB directory that the Ethereal installation-script is installing, but the other programs may not work as you want then.

I had planned to look into how to avoid that Ethereal is hanging, but haven't yet done it.
