 I installed ethereal 0.9.13-1 using Fink Commander.
In Terminal when I type ethereal (as suggested in the man page) all I get is
Gtk-WARNING **: cannot open display:.

...Ethereal is built atop GTK+-for-X11, so it requires X11. "Cannot open display" is, perhaps, not the best message - I think XLib *can* give you a real reason, which it'd be nice of GTK+ to display - but the reason in this case might be "you don't have X11 installed".

At some point it might not require X11 on Mac OS X, either

	1) because the GTK+-for-Quartz people get it working well enough

or

	2) because a Cocoa or Carbon or Qt UI is written for it.

(My current inclinations are towards Qt, as that gives us a perhaps nicer Windows UI, and an X11-less Mac OS X UI, as well as much of the work towards a KDE UI, and at least some of the zEthereal Qtopia work. I've no idea when, if ever, I'll get to look at doing that, though.)
