Are you absolutely sure that the packets you see are not all broadcasts
or addressed to or from 192.168.1.2? It isn't always obvious, there's
often just enough and varied traffic to make you think you're seeing it
all.

FWIW: The cheapest hub I could find for my home network is a switch.
