In my view expert systems may help point the finger initially, but you still 
need to work out what they are pointing it at.
"Delayed ack" might be a good description of a symptom, but it doesn't help 
diagnose the fault much; you can't just replace the "ack unit" and get a 
working system. In fact in this case, although the ack times were what clued 
me in, they were the one thing that the AS400 was doing right.
