I must be missing something.  I'm trying to get ethereal to run on a stealth interface (with no IP address).
I'm using Ethereal 0.9.9 with Redhat 8.0 but I've tried this on 7.2 and 6.0.  I'm using libpcap-0.6.2-16 on Redhat 8.0.

I removed my ifcfg-eth0 entry from /etc/sysconfig/network-scripts/ and rebooted.  I typed "ifconfig eth0 up" and and eth0 came up without an IP address.  I also tried putting the interface in promis mode.  When I start ethereal everything looks like it is working but I don't get any packets.  If I try to run tcpdump I get a message that says that there was "no suitable device found"

If I give eth0 an IP address everything works fine.  I've spent a full day and a half reading manuals and searching with google.  Does anyone have any ideas?
