I had the same issue with 0.9.8 with a Windows build. Upgrading to 0.9.9 solved the issue.

How many colors does your notebook have? Does it have an 8-bit display
(or is the mode in which your X server is running it 8-bit)?
If you run it from a terminal window (xterm, etc.), does it print a
"Couldn't allocate color" warning?
