Barry,

you have not enough privileges to access the bpf devices.

Solution 1:
Execute in the Terminal
sudo chmod u+r /dev/bpf?
You have to type in your password. This has to be repeated after each 
reboot.

Solution 2:
Start ethereal in the Terminal using
sudo ethereal

There are more but this should help.
