You could use the ngrep tool from
http://www.packetfactory.net/Projects/ngrep/.

This will read from a file or from the NIC.

I'm using v 0.9.8  on W2K to monitor a PPP conection; it's working well.

I've spent some getting comfortable and in reading the manual.

One thing I don't quite see how to do (maybe I missed something in the 
manual ?): How do I seach for a text string in a set of TCP packets.
