Actually, it isn't in this case, because a dial-up connection is not a
MAC-based network. In other words, the modem doesn't have a MAC
address. Only IEEE 802 networks (Ethernet, Token Ring, some wireless) have
MAC addresses.
What I
used to do in this case was I added a script to the end of my dial-up
routine. When my computer set up the dial-up connection, the very last
thing it did was pull the latest IP address and send it to me in e-mail (on a
remote server, of course). There are probably other clever variations on
this, including having the dial-up machine register some name with a WINS or
DDNS server.
Something closer to the topic of this list might be that you could set up
a packet capture on some permanently-connected host. Then have the dial-up
machine send 5 pings of an arbitrary size with a specific message in them
whenever connection is re-established. The machine running ethereal could
look for those packets, and upon receiving them, send you a message.
That's a lot of scripting, though. Your best bet is the automatic e-mail
from the dial-up host.

P.S. Fair warning: If you do the e-mail thing, be careful
that you don't get into a situation where your dial-up connection goes up and
down rapidly or you'll have an Inbox flooded with IP address
updates!
Hey...I need to access pc remotely which is connected
via a dial-up...so it's IP changes dynamically...It's a bit of a hassle for me
to find out the IP address everytime...However, I do know the MAC address of
the machine so I was wondering if there's a way I can find out the new IP
address of the machine everytime it logs on using it's permanent ethernet
address...please suugest a way...all replies will be appreciated!
