The configure in the ethereal-0.9.6 package was created with an old
autoconf which did have some problems with newer build environments.
In case you have autoconf installed, please rerun autoconf. In case
the problem persists, your autoconf might be too old also :-)
Otherwise: Download a slightly newer source archive from
http://www-agrw.informatik.uni-kl.de/~jmayer/ethereal-0.9.6.tar.gz
that was built using autoconf 2.53 (the official archive was built
using 2.13). In case this still doen't work: Please report again!

I found out that "pro" means "instead of" (as in proconsul). Now I know
what proactive means.
