alas, I finally figured it out and should have just sent a reply to my original note. as you said, the distruibution was split into base, etc and out of frustration, I just installed everything and it started
working just fine.
the manual I had read was the one in the sidebar of the ethereal main web page and so I took that to be the latest. as a suggestion, perhaps the installation section for the binaries could state that the example
for RedHat was for the older distribution kits and state which of the other are required - as I said I just installed them all and don't know if they're all required or not.
