Yes, installing the WinPcap helps.
Ethereal doesn't crash any more.

Doesn't happen to me - Windows 2000 with WinPcap installed, Ethereal
0.9.5.  It also doesn't happen on Solaris 8 or FreeBSD 3.4 with various
builds I've done from CVS.

Are you running on Windows?  If so, do you have WinPcap installed?  If
not, Ethereal 0.9.5 (and possibly older versions) will crash if you
change any preference; the only workaround I know of is to install
WinPcap.

Does it happen if you tweak any other preference?
