Hi
I have seen from the
list archives that a couple of people (to paraphrase Giles
Scott) 'use Ethereal in conjunction with VNC for remote packet
capture, which saves thousands of $$$.'
This is exactly what
I would like to do. I have a remote server in our test environment that I
want to be able to drive from my desktop for data capture during testing.
I have installed VNC (3.3.3 R2) - no problem. I have installed
Ethereal (0.9.4) and WinPcap (2.3) on the remote server via VNC, this all
worked fine.
However, when I try
to start a capture, the VNC session freezes and the server dies (unpleasantly
according to the event log). Being remote, I cannot see exactly why the
server dies but it has now happened twice.
I have checked the
archives of WinPcap / VNC / Ethereal mailing lists and the above reference is
the only one I have found.
Has anybody gotten
this configuration to work?
Does any one have
any suggestions as to what is causing the error?
Can I schedule
finite duration captures (using 'at' and 'tethereal' command
lines for example) that will run without anyone being logged on
to the remote machine?
Thanks in
advance,
Adrian
Johnson.
