Sure, this ranges from trivial to almost impossible. Some plugins are part
of the Ethereal package, so when you get Ethereal, you will already have
some plugins. Some plugins have been written by companies to trace proprietary
protocols. You'll have a hard time to get hold of one of those.
Hmm, maybe you didn't want to ask about plugins as such but dissectors
in general? In that case: Dissectors are the modules that analyze a
protocol. They come in two flavours: As a compiled in part of the ethereal
binary or as a modules loadable at runtime, called plugin.

Sure, take a look at the ethereal source. There's a doc directory, that
contains quite a lot of information. If you need help after that, the
mailinglist archive for ethereal-dev is the place to go and search and
the list itself is the place to ask questions.

I found out that "pro" means "instead of" (as in proconsul). Now I know
