In my experience the card only shows two modes, adhoc, and ESS, which mode
did you see?

How do you mean?  I've yet to see any reasonable documentation on the
different modes the card supports, and how the output of
/proc/driver/aironet/ethn/Config or Status reflects this.

I've already asked here about interchangable drivers for the same card,
hopefully I'll pick up a clue on this soon.

I'm sure there must be one already, but if not I'm sure one of us will be
able to configure something without too much bother.
