I'm not sure whether there is, but what happens 'normally' (at least on
my Linux box) is that the 3rd (hexdump/byte view) window only opens when
a frame is actually displayed. If you start Ethereal 'bare' it displays
only the (empty) packet list and tree view windows.

So it's only aberrant behaviour when it still does it when you have
captured frames (or read them from a file); it does not do that here.
