Yes, a reply to myself.

Is there away to get Ethereal to dump any additional info while it's running
to see where it's failing?

I've tried "ethereal -T 2 -P 3 -B 4" and I still only see the top 2 panes.

the output from "ethereal -v" is:
ethereal 0.9.0, with GTK+ 1.2.10, with GLib 1.2.10, with libpcap 0.5, with
libz 1.1.3, with UCD SNMP 4.2.2

thank you

Subject: [Ethereal-users] Ethereal 0.9.0 on OpenBSD/Alpha - Only
Displays Summary/Protocol tree windows

Hi

I just installed Ethereal 0.9.0 on an OpenBSD/Alpha system
from source. Everthing seemed to compile properly. Ethereal
runs and captures data, however it only displays the first
two windows, Summary & Protocol tree, the slider bar in the
Protocol tree scroll area takes up the entire area. So in
order to see the entire protocol dissection of a packet,
sometimes you have to move the location of protocol window
upward.

It appears that the size of the protocol windows is not
being reported correctly?

Any ideas?
