might be useful, although many of the links in, say, the "PROTOCOLS"
section might not be the best place for a novice to start - I don't know
which would be useful.

WildPackets - formerly the AG Group - who sell packet analyzer software
for Windows and MacOS, have a number of links from the "Networking
Resources" page:

which might be useful.  Check out the Technical Compendium page to which
it links; it has links to papers that might be of interest.
